History of Leak Street Alumni, Inc.

The Leak Street Alumni, Inc. consists of graduates, families and friends that participate in two alumni chapters located in Rockingham, North Carolina and Washington, D.C.

Originally, the basic objective of the organization was to keep alumnus informed of when and where reunions would be held, about activities to raise funds for scholarships and to donate time and financial assistance to other outreach programs.  This objective quickly expanded to other ventures.  The Leak Street Alumni, Inc., is a unique self-help organization designed to identify and respond to the needs of the community.

On July 4, 1984, Leak Street Alumni, Inc., held the first all classes Reunion for alumni, families and friends and over 500 individuals were in attendance.  The decision was also made to host the Reunion every two years.

Leak Street Alumni, Inc., is a non profit 501© (3) organization comprised of the National Board, Washington D.C. chapter, Rockingham chapter and the Leak Street School Education and Cultural Center Board.

The Leak Street Alumni, Inc., has awarded over 28 scholarships in addition to helping support programs at the Education and Cultural Center.

In 1991, the Board of Education decided there was no longer a need for the one story building at the Leak Street School and decided to auction off the building.  The Alumni, Inc., was apprised of the decision to auction the building and decided to bid for the building.  In 1991 the Leak Street Alumni Inc., became the owner of the building and proceeded to secure funds to renovate the building and to help sponsor programs for the community in the building.  In 1993 the programs for the Leak Street Education and Cultural Center began.  The Center was not officially dedicated until 1995.

The Center currently provides the following programs:

• Support Our Students (SOS)
• Project Focus
• Restitution and Community Service Program
• Summer Camp
